I originally created the Compositional Series for Sideshow, but felt there was much more to offer than a simple flash piece. I've always been excited by composing, and was interested in creating an interactive piece that explored the many possible layout paths available with even just a limited palette and set of elements. In my opinion, nobody did a better job of boiling down the necessities for composition than the Bauhaus/Constructivist era craftsmen. Adopting a similar look and feel was an easy decision.
What I find most interesting about the Compositionals are their collaborative nature. I create single compositions of my own; yet the added interactivity allows others to discover inumerable compositions residing within their dynamic structure.
In creating each Compositional, my hope was to find a balance between the level of control I had, and the level of possibilities and interpretations the collaborator had, while satisfying both parties.
The idea of creating these dynamic compositions, and encouraging others to submit their collaborations was originally conceived by Peter Dalkner on Quadruped. Much thanks goes to Pete for allowing me to explore his concept in this incarnation.
