I recently had a fun little job that I thought would be good to post about. "Irish" Tom Dolan contracted me to do a set of seven caricatures in a medicine-show style, for a Chess Invitational website he was putting together. Quite a cool idea for a private meeting-of-the-chess-minds — check it out for yourself. I really enjoyed doing the illustrations; but I have to admit, the best part of this job was seeing the fantastic bit of typographical voodoo Tom worked on the names. As a funny sidenote, the "Mysterious Nary La" in the Championship Site turned out to be frequent-commentor, Nary. Now I just need to figure out what this RJ Hampden character looks like, and I can create the "People Who Comment on Bearskinrug Action Figure Set".

check, mate! ;) Sibhod's my favourite...I have this thing for mad scientists and evil geniuses :)
I'm dumb.
I thought the last phrase, "People Who Comment on Bearskinrug Action Figures" meant, "There's a set of action figures based on Bearskinrug characters (e.g., Mojo, the Piping Judges, the Bear). Certain people have been commenting on them, and Nary and RJ are among them!"
So I was all excited, like.
Now am sad and only capable of saying, "Eh."
I don't know how you find the time to keep pumping out all of this great work ....
I would like to see you do a caricature of "what you think" RJ Hampden looks like. That might be even more interesting. I don't know him but I don't think he would be offended.
Apple - Yeah - I especially like the treatment Tom did on his own.
Anders Sibhod or Gentleman Jon Bender are mine; but that's probably because I think they were the most successful caricatures.
John Nick - Looks like I'm going to have to redesign your figure, JN. He'll need to look more displeased...
Justin - Wayne has a pretty good point...
You should definitely design your own game of clue. The characters would be wonderful- especially that pervy Professor Plum.
I like how evil I look. Wow, this comment entry preview showing up as I type is definitely the coolest thing I've seen on the web in a while. Great work with this site and the charicatures!
Kevin's illustrations are wonderful. As far as likenesses, they are all good, but Jon Bender and Mark Stritzel are uncanny. Designers all (except Gent Jon), we'll see who's got the finest Chess mind. See the work of Kurt, dBox and the mighty Sib at Kurtnoble.com.
Those illustrations are great. No...fantastic is a better word! Thanks for showing them off!
Too bad, you wouldn't be able to fit me onto the paper because of my enormous height. (2.04m.)
And as an infrequent poster i probably won't be counted for...
*soft crying sound*
Hey enough about me.. Great designs, mr. bearskin! :)
fantastic! great work bear, i love how varied your work is, and how it's all good. ...not 'it's all good' in the cool way some people say it, but rather all the work is good. top-notch! pip pip!
Mommiiiie...I wanna Beaskinrug Action Figure..! Can I have the one with the cape?
I have been such a big fan of yours, Kevin, it's really an honor to have had a caricature done by the incredibly talented, envy-inducing proprietor of Bearskinrug. I think when Tom told me who he got to do the illustrations, I almost keeled over and passed out from excitement.
Wonderful, just wonderful work. I think my fave is Sib's -- and the type treatment is simply impeccable. {psst...Tom Dolan rocks.}
Rachael - YEAH! That would be pretty fun!
Daniel - The type preview is the master work of ol' Mr. Inman. He was generous enough to help me put up one of my own :)
Tom/Andy/Sibhod/Paul - Thanks, Gents!
Hilmerr - I wouldn't call you infrequent. Now my mom... she's a infrequent poster.
Nary - The one with the cape? Oh - you must mean the Rob Weychert figure. That's actually a bib...
I tried to get people to call me "Irish" Pierce for a while, but since everyone's Irish over here it didn't really stick. I might need something more specific.
I like the paper treatment. Very old-west. Did you do that or did Tom add it after?
Tom added it afterwards. What I gave him was actually graphite illustrations, and he took over from there.
Oh well, hel-lo, Kevin Cornell. You can get started whenever it's convenient, here's my headshot.
So RJ, you're saying you play yourself (as per the repetitions at the end of the description on that page)?
My uncle, Kasparov Cornell? Yeah... he's always bugging me about that... :D
